Christmas Around Town

We did a lot of looking around town this Christmas. We went to Grand Central Station and saw the Lionel Train display. Isaac walked around, and around, and around the large model, getting exited every time a train came on the track.

We also spent an evening looking around Rockefeller Center--the big, tall Christmas Tree was amazing for Isaac. I knew we were doing a pretty good job balancing Isaac's learning experiences when we got off the train at Times Square and amid all the flashing lights the only thing he got excited about showing me was the moon. He loves pointing out the moon. He also thought the Rockefeller Ice Rink was great. We made a night of it and had dinner at one of the Italian Restaurants there. Yum.

We continued checking classic New York Christmas things off our list by going to Macy's and waiting in the really long line to see Santa. It was not a bad wait for Isaac because Macy's built up the waiting area line as a "polar bear express" with lots of model trains. He was less scared of Santa here than he was at Bloomingdale's or at the ward Christmas party. Perhaps because it was later in the season and all the "Santa" stuff and started to sink in. He said "bye!" to Santa over and over but didn't want to leave.

We decided this year to "go big" and got an 8 and a half foot tall Christmas tree. Isaac loved everything about it. We would water the tree and I said to Isaac--the tree is drinking water! He looked at me and said "mommy funny. Tree drinkin' water, ha ha." I think he thought I was making a joke.

We also went to the train display at the New York Botanical Garden.

It was worth it. They made models of New York architecture out of plants and wood and the put model trains around them. Here is their Yankee Stadium made out of plants with a train running around it.

They were mostly old school Lionel trains, but Isaac found Thomas.

The over head wooden bridges with trains were pretty impressive. If it weren't for the hordes of people, it would have been amazingly great.

We made it to the American Natural History Museum and checked out their version of a holiday tree decorated completely with origami birds and animals. It was pretty cool, but the main attraction for Isaac was the Butterfly exhibit where we got to see butterflies in their natural habitat. They flew all around us and even landed on Isaac's shoe.

Christmas day we spent with family on Long Island. Isaac loves his cousin Waela and is taking tips from her here on how to bottle feed a baby doll.

Christmas night we headed home and got here before the snow storm shut down the Long Island Rail Road and all other forms of transportation. Cliff made us some dinner and we celebrated in grand style--candles and all. We were so grateful to be together as a family and remember the meaning of Christmas.
